Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring, Water Body Location and Classification.
One of the 12 core NPS natural resource inventories, this inventory focuses on the locations (with additional classification from that included in digital cartographic information) of streams, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater (hot springs, cold springs); and water quality use classifications in national park units. High-resolution National Hydrography Datasets (NHD) have been created by the U.S. Geological Survey for each park subbasin. A pilot effort to determine feasibility of providing state designated beneficial use classifications revealed that it would be more cost-effective to pursue that portion of the inventory at a later date when EPA has compiled most of the necessary data. While waiting for this to occur, a Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics database generated from NHD and Clean Water Act 303(d) listings (information reported to EPA by states that takes into account their designated beneficial use classifications) has been developed.
