Data were collected at eight spatially-balanced random locations at the Monument using an adaptation of the variable-circular plot (VCP) technique with distance estimation. Sampling activities occurred at the Monument in late April and again in late May in 2010. 256 birds representing 46 species were detected; two of which were non-native species. Monitoring efforts resulted in the addition of three new species to the Monument’s official species list: common moorhen, red-headed woodpecker, and the non-native house finch. House finch and European starling were the only non-native birds detected. An evaluation of sampling effort relative to the number of species detected indicated that the sample adequately characterized the bird diversity, and analyses suggest bird diversity is high at the Monument. Laughing gull, Northern cardinal, and red-winged blackbird were the most widely distributed species detected at the Monument.
