Data were collected at five spatially-balanced random locations at the Monument using an adaptation of the variable-circular plot (VCP) technique with distance estimation. Sampling activities occurred at the Monument in late April and again in late May in 2010. 200 birds representing 36 species were detected; four of which were non-native species. Monitoring efforts resulted in the addition of five new species to the Monument’s official species list: green heron, chimney swift, Eastern kingbird, blue jay, and seaside sparrow. An evaluation of sampling effort relative to the number of species detected indicated that the sample adequately characterized the bird diversity, and analyses suggest bird diversity is moderate at the Monument. Barn swallow, blue jay, boat-tailed grackle, Eurasian collared-dove, mourning dove, Northern cardinal, and Northern mockingbird were the most widely distributed species detected at the Monument.
