Castillo de San Marcos National Monument historic resource study
Brown JD. 1997. Castillo de San Marcos National Monument historic resource study. Historic Resource Study. National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Atlanta, GA
The study establishes and documents historic contexts associated with the park and evaluates the extent to which the surviving historic resources represent those contexts. This report utilizes previous research to evaluate the park's resources through the development of historic contexts. Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest remaining European fortification in the United States. Built in 1672, the Castillo represents the European conflicts that were fought over the control of the United States. The Castillo was renamed Fort Marion by the United States War Department after ownership of Florida was transferred from Spain to the United States. The Castillo was declared a national monument in 1924 and began to be overseen by the National Park Service in 1933. This Historic Resource Study surveys and evaluates the historical properties of the national monument using criteria outlined in the National Register. The Historic Resource Study along with the associated survey documents of Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is intended to provide park management with information regarding the historical structures found in the park, an interpretive framework for the park and also update the National Register documentation.
