Proposed relocation of the SCDHEC ambient air quality monitoring station

Congaree Swamp National Monument. 1999. Proposed relocation of the SCDHEC ambient air quality monitoring station. Congaree Swamp National Monument, South Carolina

This document is an Environmental Assessment of the proposed relocation of the SCDHEC ambient air quality monitoring station located in Congaree Swamp National Monument The old Wise Lake ambient air quality monitoring station was located in a "potential" wilderness area and was prone to complications, such as flooding, failing electrical service, and unreliable telephone service. The monitoring station was also situated at the end of a "service road" which was commonly used as a foot trail. The vehicular traffic using this road interferred with the wilderness experience. It was proposed that the monitoring station be moved to a location that was not as frequently used but more easily accessed: near Dawson Cabin. This Environmental Assessment includes three different alternatives : a "No-Action" alternative, a "Relocation of the Air Quality Monitoring Station to the Dawson Cabin Site" alternative, and a "Abandon the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Program" alternative. The "Relocation" alternative was the proposed alternative. Based upon this assessment, very little would be negatively impacted by the movement of the monitoring station.
