This document discusses the Georgia Loggerhead Recovery and Habitat Protection Plan and the survey methods used to assist in the implementation of the management plan. The monitoring of the nesting activities of the loggerhead turtle is considered a high priority action as it establishes population trends and evaluates the effectiveness of the nest protection measures. Population levels for the loggerhead turtle are important to know as it is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Different methods and management practices were used by the state of Georgia to manage the loggerhead turtle populations until it was standardized with the implementation of the Georgia Loggerhead Recovery and Habitat Protection Plan. This plan is based off of the Recovery Plan for the U.S. Population of Loggerhead Turtles, which is overseen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The survey methods for loggerhead turtle nests used in 2002 are described in detail in this report along with assessments of all the habitats in which a nest was found.
