The guidebook is a collection of contributions that are designed to aid in the comparison of geomorphic features and sedimentary facies of Cumberland Island, Georgia with the backbarrier regions that contain outcrops of Pleistocene barrier island deposits. The field trip that this guidebook supplemented included discussions of: modern barrier island facies, geomorphology, and processes; the preservation and origin of barrier-associated facies in Pleistocene deposits; the significance and origin of Ophiomorpha nodosa, a shoreline indicator; the age of the Pleistocene deposits; and the origin of economically valuable heavy mineral deposits. A large number of authors contributed to the guidebooks and to the planned discussions. The fifteen different contributions contained within the guidebook are arranged and numbered in accordance to the content and the order of the field stops. The field trip was focused on Cumberland Island, Bells River and St. Marys River.
