The study objective was to identify major biotic resources (plants and conspicuous animals) in the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve (TIMU) salt marsh and to provide data to enhance the current Geographic Information System (GIS) wetland vegetation database and maps, such as those available through the St. John's River Water Management District (SJRWMD). Ultimately this information can contribute to decisions pertaining to activities in and around the TIMU, including: permitting of construction, surface and ground water withdrawals, wastewater discharge, and dredge and fill permits. Development in the vicinity of the TIMU and its water sources is assured. Since tidal marshes comprise over half of the TIMU land area, they will undoubtedly be included in many of the issues that affect the TIMU. To begin to address these issues, knowledge of the biotic resources within the marshes is necessary. This is especially true of the relatively species-rich transitional marshes between the saline and freshwater marshes. They are the least well known, however, and they usually do not account for the large proportion of intertidal land. Nevertheless, they may have unique habitat value. A good description of these areas is necessary to evaluate them.
