An inventory of significant natural areas was conducted in the Public Reserved Lands of the Mahoosuc Range, Oxford County, Maine. Management recommendations which are compatible with the long range goals of the Bureau of Public Lands and the Bureau of parks and Recreation are submitted. At present, recreation is the major resource value which is recognized in the range. The appalachian Trail, four access trails and four shelters serve as the recreational facilities. Eleven rare plant sepecies were confirmed as extant in the range. Three vegetation types in the subalpine zone of the range were identified as unusual and sensitive. Two exemplary softwood stands and two exemplary mixed hardwood stands were identified. Management prioriteis and recreational use guidelines are identified for three management zones of the Mahoosucs. Educational efforts are also recommended to further protect the future of these resources. Site specific maintenance is recommended for several degraded areas. These recommendationas are submitted to the Department of Conservation for consideration in the development of a general management plan for the Public Reserved Lands of the Mahoosuc Range.
