NPS AlaskaPak is a collection of custom tools developed to meet the needs of GIS users in the Alaska Region. This toolkit is designed to augment the functionality of ESRI’s ArcGIS by providing a simple interface for many common tasks and workflows performed by GIS specialists, resource managers, and other scientists working with spatial data at NPS. Background: NPS AlaskaPak was first developed for ArcView 3.0 to provide functionality that was not integrated into the ESRI software. The toolkit has continued to grow as GIS users in the Alaska Region have become more technically savvy and have required more custom needs for spatial tools and analysis. Versions of AlaskaPak have been created to support ArcGIS 8.x, 9.x and 10.x. Technical Details: NPS AlaskaPak provides a single point of access for all the tools in the toolkit through a toolbar/menu. Many of the tools in the current version 3.0 are available as geoprocessing tools in ArcToolbox. This provides additional flexibility by allowing users to incorporate them into custom models and workflows. Key Tools: Create random transects, points, and selections Create and populate common attributes (id, X, Y, length, area) Convert features between geometry types Create features from tabular data Create and modify grids
