At the direction of Congress, the National Park Service is studying alternative concepts for commemorating Spanish colonization in New Mexico. Much is already happening in New Mexico at the federal, state, and local levels to commemorate and interpret the period of Spanish colonization. However, several important aspects of the story are not currently represented, and many important resources are at risk. Action is needed to ensure that this important part of our nation's history is appropriately commemorated. This study identifies the themes considered by scholars of Spanish colonization to be the most important ideas conveyed to the public; a preliminary list of 22 sites that the National Park Service, in consultation with scholars, to be the best representations known to date of the various elements of the Spanish colonization story; and seven alternative concepts for commemorating Spanish colonization in New Mexico.
