Kestner Homestead Cultural Landscape Analysis and Recommendations Spring 1997

This Cultural Landscape Catalog provides a preliminary analysis and evaluation of the historic landscape at the Kestner Homestead in Olympic National Park. The purpose of the Catalog is to identify and evaluate historic landscape resources, and based on that evaluation, develop preliminary guidelines and recommendations for preservation, rehabilitation, maintenance, and interpretation of those resources. This document is a technical supplement and does not replace a standard cultural landscape report. Additional work and research will be required prior to implementation of specific recommendations and/or design concepts. Both the Catalog and future proejcts resulting from the Catalog'is programmatic information will receive review from appropriate local, state and federal entities. District boundaries are based primarily on property lines designating the parcel of land purchased by the Olympc National Park. The preservation boundary is drawn along the edges of cleared land to reflect the land use characteristics of the district. A substantial portion of the information represented in this report was provided by a personal interview with March (Kestner) Morris, Antone and Josepha Kestner's grandaughter who lived next to and on the homestead, by a manuscript written by March Morris and, video tapes of the 1996 Kestner-Higley picnic at the homestead, of personal experiences on the homestead.
