The night sky is a resource that is being threatened, similar to plant and animal species that the National Park Service is responsible for protecting. Dark nights and natural lighting patterns are important to certain plant and animal species for survival. The National Park Service is protecting the night skies by finding sources of bad lighting and encouraging the use of good nnighttime lighting. Components of bad lighting include urban sky glow, glare, too much light, and energy waste.
