The Grand Canyon National Park-Grand Canyon/Parashant National Monument Vegetation Classification and Mapping Project is part of the NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program (VMI). VMI is an effort by the National Park Service (NPS) to classify, describe, and map existing vegetation of national park units for the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program. Supported by the NPS-VMI, Grand Canyon National Park, NatureServe, Kass Green Associates, and Northern Arizona University have completed the classification and mapping of plant communities of Grand Canyon National Park and portions of Grand Canyon– Parashant National Monument. The NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program uses the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS), a classification system well integrated with the major scientific efforts in the taxonomic classification of vegetation. Maps are produced in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), NAD83 datum with a 1:24,000 scale and a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 hectares. The vegetation maps must meet the National Map Accuracy Standards for positional accuracy and the minimum class accuracy goal across all vegetation and land cover classes of 80 percent. Ecologists and botanists from NatureServe, Northern Arizona University and the National Park Service created the vegetation classification based on 1496 vegetation classification plots within the mapping area. An innovative combination of automated image segmentation and regression-tree analysis was used to create the vegetation map based on 1-meter, 4-band digital aerial imagery from the 2007 and 2010 USDA National Agriculture Inventory Program (NAIP). The final map contained 87 map classes with a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 hectares across more than 560,000 hectares.
