'A 5-cm-wide intermediate dike intrudes gabbro on the southern coast of Mount Desert Island, Maine. The dike appears to preserve, in the width of a thin section, much of Bowen's discontinuous reaction series. It is strongly mineralogically differentiated, with a clinopyroxene margin, followed inward by a zone of hornblende altering to chlorite, and finally by a biotite/potassium fledspar/quartz zone in the center of the dike. The dike intrudes gabbro, which itself ingulfed large sedimentary blocks of the Silurian Bar Harbor Series. Granitic magma appears to have intruded the gabbro. Although the interior of the dike is similar in composition to the granitic intrusions, the clinopyroxene/hornblends-rich margins of the dike indicate that the liquid from which the dike crystallized was intermediate to the gabbro and the granite.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/ **Note: No electronic version available**
