The amount of change of pH needed to precipitate calcium carbonate from either sea water or from the blood of crabs are investigated here using sea water and crabs from the coast of Maine. From Introduction, 'The experiments support the view that if the cuticle were to be rendered alkaline calcification would follow. They show that if this were the main process precipitation from the blood would entail raising matrix pH by about 1'0 unit, to a value close to that of sea water, while to prevent leaching from the outer surface into the sea would require a pH some 0.5 units higher, a total of about 1.5 units above blood pH.'The shore crabs used in this experiment were collected from Seawall, Bennet Cove, and Seal Cove /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Seawall/Bennet Cove/Seal Cove/
