The investigation examines the possibility that the regulatory capacity is dependent upon the normal disposition of skin or muscle, either one being sufficient in the absence of the other. From Introduction, 'The results, however, show that unilateral ablation of both of these soft tissues has no effect on the morphogenetic success of the regenerative process, bilateral symmetry arising from the asymmetric stump. The locus of morphogenetic control and, therefore, the mechanism by which pattern formation is regulated differs fundamentally from that of the limb.'
