'The Cranberry Island Series is a Siluro-Devonian sequence of interbedded ash-flow tuffs, volcanic breccias, and rhyolitic and basaltic flows. The 2.6-km-thick sequence is exposed on Great Cranberry Island, Maine, where it dips steeply to the southeast. Based on the presence of primary sedimentary structures, at least part of the volcanic sequence is water laid. XRF analysis of major oxides in 85 samples reveals several compositional trends that bear on the volcanic history of the region. Except for a small basal portion, the silica levels are high (70-80%) and uniform throughout the lower two thirds of the sequence, suggesting a common source of the pyroclastics and flows.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLANDS/Little Cranberry Island/Great Cranberry Island
