'A survey was initiated to determine available information on the extent, character, and management of old-growth forest on lands managed by the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). In 1988 a questionnaire was distributed to all NPS units that possibly contain forests in an old-growth condition. The results of the responses of the 58 units are given here, including summaries of forest types involved and of disturbances affecting old growth. No official NPS definition of old growth existed, and the working definition used by respondents differed widely. The amount of old growth was estimated at more than 1.97 million ha (4,867,800 acres), located in 32 states and the District of Columbia, and in all ten NPS regions. Information was also compiled on the percentages of NPS units that have (1) species lists for old-growth areas; (2) management plans specific to old growth; and (3) current research projects, long-term data sets, and permanent plots in old-growth areas. These summaries provide insight into how the NPS is handling the issue of old growth locally, regionally, and nationally.' Acadia is included in this article.
