'There is great uncertainty and large cost in making dry deposition measurements. We present evidence based on wet deposition, evapotranspiration, S storage in lake sediments, and sulfate concentrations in lakes and streams in Maine that the dry deposition flux of sulfur to drainage basins of lakes in Maine ranges from nearly 0% to more than 100% of wet deposition, even in small areas. The regional pattern of sulfate concentrations in Maine lakes is due to gradients in both wet and dry deposition and variation in evapotranspiration. Patterns are modified locally by lake hydrologic type, elevation, vegetation, and terrestrial drainage basin aspect.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
