FIELD WORK: (September, October 1998) 'Nothern forest soils represent large reservoirs of Cand N that may be altered by ecosystem perturbations. Soils at three paired watersheds in Maine were investigated as case studies of experimetnally elevated N depostion, wildfire, and whole-tree harvesting.' This study used Cannon Brook and Hadlock Brook Watersheds for the comparison of soil C and N compsion of burned and non-burned forest systems respectivley. The watersheds are 4.5 km appart and are noted to have similar soil composions with differing dominant forest canopies. ' Fifty years after wildfire at Acadia National Park, the burned watersehd with hardwood regeneration had significantly lower forest-floor C and N concentrations (208 g C kg-1 soil, 9.9 g N kg-1 soil) than the reference (71 Mg C ha-1, 1323 kg N ha-1).'
