'Two ongoing research projects within Acadia National Park have been designed to identify cause-specific mortality of white-tailed deer on Mount Desert Island.' Describes project progress to date and planned future activities. Objectives of the project included: '1. Document cause-specific mortality of adult female and fawn white-tailed deer on Mount Desert island, Maine; 2. Assess patterns of spatial overlap among coyote and white-tailed deer on MDI to quantitatively assess whether coyotes influence available habitat for deer in Acadia National Park; 3. Incorporate deer (adults and fawns) mortality rates collected during this study into a previously established simulation model for deer in Maine to assess the effects of mortality on deer population dynamics; 4. Determine the extent of shared use of private lands and park lands by deer inhabiting Mount Desert Island; 5 Estimate the relative abundance of snowshoe hare on Mount Desert Island and compare this with a population from the mainland.(I.E., this objective was not included in original project proposals but was added to accommodate thesis requirements of the University.
