'In this proposal, I outline a research plan for Acadia National Park involving targeted surveys of selected taxa and research on monitoring methodology.' 'Research is proposed to evaluate and improve monitoring methods for invertebrates at Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Maine, that will be applicable to natural areas nationwide. Acadia is unique in having had a comprehensive survey of its insect fauna early in this century. These records, along with the proposed study, will be used to develop a monitoring program to track the 'health' of the invertebrate fauna, and to serve as an early-warning system that can detect deterioration of natural communities at the park.' 'Field samples of selected invertebrate taxa will be coupled with theoretical studies to develop and evaluate invertebrate monitoring programs. Stratified random samples well be compared to investigator-directed (search) samples in terms of efficiency, completeness of inventories, replicability of results, etc. Search samples will reproduce, as closely as possible, the samples taken by W. Procter and associates from 1918 to 1946, and to assess the effects of the 1947 fire on the terrestrial invertebrate fauna of Mount Desert Island.' 'Theoretical examination of invertebrate monitoring programs will utilize computer simulations and probabilistic models to study the relative strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to sampling, and the ability of these techniques to detect changes in invertebrate faunas and in ecosystem-level processes. Data from the field samples will be used to help develop these models. Protocols for invertebrate inventory and monitoring programs will be developed that maximize species richness in samples, as well as comparability of samples from different sites and different years.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
