Trail conditions/tasks completed on NPS land: Isle au Haute
Bubier J, Coleman T, Keating J, Banach RA. 2002. Trail conditions/tasks completed on NPS land: Isle au Haute
From the introduction: "The University of Maine forestry students arrived on Isle au Haute with the intent to mark the already existing park trails on the island. The students also pointed out areas of interest, such as an old homestead and an old cemetery. Starting on the twenty-ninth of May 2002, the crew walked to Duck Harbor Mountain Trail by way of the Duck Harbor Trail and continued onto the Eben's Head Trail using the Trimble Pro XR to record points at sign posts and the Trimble Geo Explorer 3 GPS receiver to map out the trail as they progressed. On the second day, the thirtieth of May 2002, they mapped the Nat Merchant Trail, the Ridge Trail, and part of the Long Pond Trail using only the Trimble Geo Explorer 3 GPS receiver. The data that was collected has been compared to the pre-existing USGS maps and the NPS map. Also included are notes about each trail concerning level of difficulty, problems had with navigation on the trails (due to fading blaze marks), hazards (fuel loading), stand types, campground condition, and as said before points of interest."
