From Introduction, 'The following report on old growth white pine stands in Maine has been prepared for Maine's Critical Areas Program. This program was established by an act of the legislature in 1974 which directed the State Planning Office to develop an official Register of Critical Areas and to encourage and coordinate the conservation of such areas as part of its overall responsibility for comprehensive statewide planning and coordination of planning activities.
