Water quality in Somes Sound (Acadia National Park, Maine) : a preliminary evaluation

Doering P and Roman T. 1991. Water quality in Somes Sound (Acadia National Park, Maine) : a preliminary evaluation. Narragansett, RI

This is a proposal for a two year study which involves data collection and synthesis. 'The proposed study has three main objectives.1) To gather base-line information on the distribution of dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients, salinity and temperature in Somes Sound.2) To gather base-line information on the discharge of freshwater streams into the system and the concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients in these discharges.3) These data will be used to evaluate water quality in the Sound and present level of environmental stress as judged by extent of hypoxic (<3 mg O2/1) or anoxic bottom water. As part of this effort we will make estimates of 2It is anticipated that this study will be the initial step toward assessing the ecological quality and function of Somes Sound. Following the physical and water quality characterization, as proposed herein, we plan to evaluate the living resources (e.g., fishes, benthos, avifauna).' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Somes Sound/
