A description of ecological factors affecting the distribution and status of river otters. FIELD WORK: 1985 - March 1987. MAMMALS: Otter signs were documented on 25 of 39 watersheds on Mount Desert Island. Presence of otter was correlated with beaver activity. Otter avoided watersheds not used by beaver. Dubuc suggests 1) periodic otter sign surveys to monitor population status; 2) maintenance or encouragement of beaver flowages to assure habitat for otter; and 3) establish resource protection zones to assure otters have access to marine resources. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
