A description of the lakes and ponds in Hancock and eastern Penobscot counties FIELD WORK: July - September 1942. FISH: Notes species of fish found in 8 ponds on Mount Desert Island using gill nets and seines for sampling and notes whether species is common, rare, or absent in each pond. Introductions and plantings of fish are generally described for the 1880's to the 1940's with more detailed summaries for 1933-1945. Notes species introduced from 1890 - 1900 include Loch Levin Brown Trout, Scotch Sea Trout, Rainbow Trout, Lake Whitefish, and Landlocked Salmon. Makes recommendations for future management and stocking. Notes the lengths, weight, sex, and maturity of salmon collected. WATER QUALITY: Temperature, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus levels, and pH were measured at 5 foot depth intervals for the ponds sampled. For each pond, notes pond number, elevation, acreage, maximum depth, depth above which the temperature was in excess of 70 degrees, depth above which dissolved oxygen was more than 5 p.p.m. Also maps pond depths. FLORA - ALGAE: Plankton were collected from the ponds sampled. A table notes general abundance per cubic foot of Blue-green, Yellow-brown, and Green algae. INVERTEBRATES: Plankton samples were collected from the ponds sampled. A table notes the number of organisms per cubic foot for the following: water fleas, rotifers, protozoa, diatoms, dismids, and flagellates. Surveyed invertebrates of Long Pond and Jordan Pond (including volume and numbers of flatworms, roundworms, aquatic earthworms, leeches, water fleas, and freshwater shrimp, snails, and clams) using an ekman dredge. No specimens are identified to species. INSECTS & ARACHNIDS: For Long Pond and Jordan Pond, notes the volume and numbers of Alderfly larvae, Mayfly nymphs, Beetle larvae, caddisfly larvae, midge larvae, mosquito larva, and water mites /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Seal Cove Pond/Long Pond/Upper Hadlock Pond/Jordan Pond/Eagle Lake/Bubble Pond/Echo Lake/Somes Pond/ GIS-CATEGORY 2 ; Fish: Contains inventories of fish in 8 ponds
