Progress report: Evaluate Mercury Contamination in Aquatic Environments of Acadia National Park and Cape Cod National Seashore

Haines T. 1996. Progress report: Evaluate Mercury Contamination in Aquatic Environments of Acadia National Park and Cape Cod National Seashore

Report outlines results of following tasks: 1. characterize mercury contaminated fish and their distribution in Acadia and assess the environmental factors that are related to mercury accumulation by aquatic organisms. Water and fish samples were collected and analyzed from 10 lakes within Acadia (MDI and Isle au Haut). In Acadia, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and white perch had the highest mercury levels while brook trout, lake trout, and londlocked Atlantic salmon had the lowest. Water quality parameters measured included: acid neutralizing capacity, specific conductance, true color, calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), SO4, NO3, Chlorine (Cl), Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and Ammonium (NH4). Appendix lists raw data for water quality and fish mercury parameters. 2. determine a historical data set of trends in mercury deposition. Sediment cores from Great Heath and Sargent Mountain Pond were analyzed for mercury deposition. 3. Mercury content of precipitation. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bubble Pond/Eagle Lake/Echo Lake/Hamilton Pond/Hodgdon Pond/Jordan Pond/Lower Hadlock Pond/Long Pond/Round Pond/Seal Cove Pond/Somes Pond/Big Heath/Sargent Mountain Pond/ISLE AU HAUT/Long Pond/
