Summarizes results of lake chemistry on Mount Desert Island and Isle au Haut and compares these results to chemistry in other Maine lakes. Tables include lists of raw data for all water quality parameters measured. 'The major lakes of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park are poorly buffered and have low nutrient concentrations. Compared to data in the 1980's, acid neutralizing capacity is slightly higher, and sulfate and non-marine base cations are slightly lower, consistent with regional trends. Lake trophic levels range from very oligotrophic (the major lakes) to eutrophic and/or dystriphic (smaller wetland ponds). There are insufficient data to report on trends in nutrient concentrations. The pattern of higher nutrients proximal to the developed shorelines of lakes was noted in earlier studies, and this patern continues. In general, these lakes are dilute poorly buffered waters, vulnerable to changes in nutrient or acid inputs.'
