FLORA - VASCULAR: Identifies old-growth forests in Maine and evaluates them for possible Critical Areas status. Describes a 20 acre 'uncut' old growth Red Spruce stand on Bernard Mountain and an old growth White Pine stand in Salsbury Cove of 10.8 hectares. Also notes the possibility of an old-growth area of hemlock on Penobscot Mountain and old-growth spruce on Ironbound Island (not field checked). Liverwort: Notes the liverwort Bazzania trilobata as occurring in the Bernard Mountain old-growth stand. SOILS: Notes the soil in the old-growth stand on Bernard Mountain has a mottled silty loam soil with a pH of 4.2 with scattered charcoal /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bernard Mountain/Salsbury Cove
