FIELD WORK: April 1977-September 1978. MAMMALS - BEAVER: This is the most extensive work done to date on beaver in the park. A survey conducted by foot and canoe April - November 1977, combined with an aerial survey May 1978 to map colony sites, estimated 282 + or - 89 beaver on Mount Desert Island. In the winter forty-seven active colonies were located, with an estimated 6 + or - 1.9 animals per colony. 95% of the population was noted to be inhabiting the eastern portions of the park. The study also evaluated 30 beaver lodge sites, assessing availability and density of preferred food species, size of feeding area, estimates for site longevity for each site, and potential for damage to park resources. Trapping was noted as the major cause of mortality with 30.8 beaver trapped per year between 1973 and 1977. Discusses five management options for managing beaver population /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Witch Hole Pond/Breakneck Ponds/Eagle Lake/Gilmore Meadow/Aunt Betty Pond/Sargent Mountain/The Bubbles/Kebo Brook/Great Meadow/Wild Gardens/Sieur de Monts Spring/Dorr Mountain/Cadillac Mountain/Bubble Pond/Champlain Mountain/The Beehive/Sand Beach/Gorham Mountain/The Bowl/Halfway Mountain/The Triad/ GIS-CATEGORY 2 ; Mammals: Map shows distribution of beaver at Acadia National Park
