CLIMATE: Includes data on climactic patterns and weather 1940-79. FIRE: Summarizes major fires in the park between 1848-1947, and lists the cause of all fires reported between 1937-79. Most fires were caused by smoking. Discusses the correlation between logging of small spruce and increased incidents of fire on Mount Desert Island mid-1800's to early 1900's. Fire-FLORA - VASCULAR: Data was collected from 26 sample stands noting species composition, abundance of each species, age and structure of the stand, and past occurrence of fire or other disturbance at each site. Some of these stands are noted as old growth. Raw data in appendix. From these data species diversity was calculated. Baseline inventories of fuel loads in representative forest cover types were conducted by sampling standing and downed fuels for each stand, and are reported in tons/acre, with written descriptions of the fire danger for each stand. FLORA - VASCULAR: Gives biomass equations for a number of tree species (appendix).
