List of oil spills 1953-1973: February 22, 1971: Bar Harbor, Hulls Cove - Frenchmans Bay Motel spilled 500 gallons of #2 fuel. Oil spread for 2.5 miles along Frenchman Bay. December 28, 1971: Southwest Harbor - H.R. Beal and Sons spilled 5 gallons of diesel. March 15, 1972: Southwest Harbor - Gross Lobster Warf spilled 6 gallons of #2 fuel. May 31, 1972: Swans Island - 15 gallons of kerosene were spilled. Contaminated beach was removed and the oil burned. June 1, 1972: Manset - Hinkley Boat yard spilled 40 gallons of diesel. June 10, 1972: Bar Harbor - 20 gallons of an unknown substance was spilled. July 27, 1972: Southwest Harbor - 5 gallons of diesel and waste were spilled. October 3, 1972: Southwest Harbor - U.S. Coast Guard spilled 20 gallons of #2 fuel. November 8, 1972: Southwest Harbor - 30 gallons of bilge oil was spilled /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bar Harbor/Southwest Harbor
