BIRDS: Hardwood Island had 132 Great Blue Heron nests in 1973, 78 nests in 1974, 78 nests in 1975 and 60 nests in 1976. Great Blue Herons were also noted nesting on Long Porcupine Island in the 1930's or 40's. 75 Nests of Black-crowned Night Herons were noted from Little Duck Island in 1931. Hardwood Island was registered as a Critical Area for Great Blue Herons in Maine /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLANDS/Hardwood Island
