Kahl JS, Andersen JL, Norton SA. 1985. Technical Report : Water Resource Baseline Data and Assessment of Impacts from Acidic Precipitation, Acadia National Park, Maine. Technical Report Number 16

Contents include: introduction, study area, physical setting, precipitation chemistry, methods, site selection, water chemistry, sediment chemistry, analytical procedures, results, surface water chemistry, sediment chemistry, discussion, sensitivity of ANP waters to acidification, relationship to other surveys, surface water chemistry, inferred historical water chemistry, and conclusions. FIELD WORK: 1982-1984. WATER QUALITY: The chemistry of 18 lakes and ponds and 23 first and second order streams were monitored (1982-1984) to provide baseline data and ascertain water quality. Constituents measured include water temperature, pH, baseflow alkalinity, specific conductance, color, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, silica, aluminum, and manganese. Sargent Mountain Pond was found to be the most acidic. Mean pH of precipitation was 4.4, with wet sulfate loadings of 15-20 kg/ha/yr. Mean acid neutralizing capability was 52 ueq/l. AIR QUALITY: Chemistries of sediment cores taken from Sargent Mountain Pond, The Bowl and Long Pond (Isle au Haut) were analyzed to estimate watershed and atmospheric loading histories.
