'A three year study on the growth and development of selected forest stands as related to environmental perturbations in Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Maine is proposed. Techniques which include tree ring analyses, elemental analysis of wood (scanning electron microscope) and x-ray densitometry will yield a data base which will contain information on past or existing pollution levels, significant disturbances (insects, fire, drought) and related growth. In addition to providing insight into growth and development of forest stands, this study will provide the basis for evaluating consequences of future impacts such as those imposed by acid rain, airborne pollution and human use. Pertinent literature is reviewed and proposed research discussed.
