'The Mount Desert Island, League of Towns (LOT) and Acadia National Park (ANP) cooperated in a water quality monitoring program for twelve lakes on Mount Desert Island (MDI) in 1993.' Conducted bi-weekly bacterial sampling at three freshwater swim beaches on Mount Desert Island and the brackish water lagoon at Sand Beach. Each water sample was analyzed for both Escherichia coli and enterococcus bacteria. Although bacterial levels were within both Maine Department of Environmental Protection and United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, levels were high enough to warrant continued monitoring in order to adequately protect human health at these beaches. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Echo Lake/Long Pond/Lake Wood/Sand Beach/
