'Natural populations of broad-leaf aster and spreading dogbane at Acadia National Park were quantitatively sampled for visually detectable symptoms of foliar ozone injury. Assessment was made between August 12 and 16, 1996. Four of 18 populations of broad-leaf aster showed ozone injury, as did four of 16 dogbane populations. In populations with ozone injury, 2-11% of aster individuals and 2-13% of dogbane individuals were affected. Ozone injury in two dogbane populations was probably more frequent than reported above, as the presence of dogbane necrosis on many plants confounded the interpretation of injury usually attributed to ozone. Black cherry, small sundrops, and flat-topped aster were examined at a limited number of sites. None of these species showed clear symptoms of ozone injury, although several flat-topped aster populations exhibited ozone-like symptoms. Ozone injury on broad-leaf aster in 1996 occured at more sites than in 1993-94, and one less site than 1995. Ozone injury on dogbane was more frequent than in the three previous years.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ACADIA NATIONAL PARK/
