FIELD WORK: January 31-February 2, 1939. MAMMALS - DEER: Inspected portions of the park to determine whether the deer herd is endangering the forest. Concludes that it is desirable to retain the maximum number of deer in the park consistent with the carrying capacity of the range and that a deer census is important, but will be of value only to the extent concrete plans are made well in advance and successfully executed, Recommends that further study of the browse situation be conducted, stomach contents of deer killed by automobiles be analyzed, and deer exclosures should be established /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Pretty Marsh/Great Meadow/Aunt Betty Pond/
