Chase GE, Gregory LL, National Park Service, Acadia National Park. 1998. Acadia National Park purple loosestrife management program: 1998 management summary. Acadia National Park Natural Resources Report 98-08
'Annual monitoring of L. salicaria stem numbers was conducted at the seven permanent monitoring grids in the park. No L. salicaria stems were present in grids 1-5; three and ten stems, respectively, were counted in grids 6 and 7.' 'All park L. salicaria populations received 1% glysophate herbicide solution treatment and post spray mortality evaluation. Areas were re-sprayed if necessary. When we received landowner permission, some non-park sites received herbicide treatment. Flowering heads were removed from plants prior to spraying; two non-park sites werenot sprayed, only flowering heads removed. A total of 50.25 personnel hours were spent, and 7.14 gallons of 1% glysophate solution were used at 12 park and six non-park sites.' 'Surveys for L. salicaria were conducted both in areas that have historically contained the plant, and in eight areas that have never had L. salicaria but contain suitable habitat. Three new areas of L. salicaria were found and treated. Lastly, a geographic information system map was made of all active and inactive L. salicaria locations known on Mount Desert Island.' Appendix A contains key and map of known locations of purple loosestrife during 1998; Appendix B contains 1998 transect monitoring data; Appendix C contains 1998 biological control monitoring data, and Appendix D contains 1998 GPS data. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bear Brook Pond/Beaver Dam Pond/ Bear Brook/The Tarn/Visitor Center/Hulls Cove House/Breakneck Brook/Kent Field/Blackwoods Dump Road/Saterlee Gravel Pit/Duck Brook/Duck Brook Road/Great Meadow/Otter Cliff/Miller Garden/North Breakneck Pond/Wildwood/Stanley Brook/Sonogee Estates/Jackson Laboratory/Otter Creek/Southwest Harbor/Ocean Drive Dairy Bar/Compass Harbor/Parkman Mountain Parking Lot/Thorndike Field/Witch Hole Pond Outflow/
