Prince AE and Steinmetz FH. 1940. Gymnosporangium rusts in Maine and their host relationships. The Maine Bulletin - University of Maine Studies. Series Volume ID: 42 (12); Series Issue ID: Second Series, No. 50. University of Maine. Orono, Maine

'In this paper the results of the critical studies of Gymnosporangium nidusavis and G. juvenescens are presented first, and secondly, the data concerning ten other species occurring in Maine follow. In the Appendix, keys, based upon the telial and aecial stages of Gymnosporangium species occurring in Maine are given. In addition the synonomy of G. nidus-avis and copies of the labels of the specimens of Maine Gymnosporangium rusts in the Rev. J.B. Blake Herbarium with comments are given. Finally the experimental data and statistical analyses are given in tabular form.' 'Steinmetz (1936) reported a telial specimen of a Gymnosporangium rust collected in 1933 in Bar Harbor, Maine. At that time the specimen was identified as G. juvenescens, but it was later found to be indistinguishable from G. nidus-avis by preliminary cultures and spore characteristics. As a result, intensive studies and cultures of these two species of Gymnosporangium rusts collected in Maine were initiated.' In the late 1800's and early 1900's J.C. Arthur collected rusts on Mount Desert Island (including Cadillac Mountain and other areas) and Isle au Haut. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Cadillac Mountain/ISLE AU HAUT/
