This is phase II of a study using the Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) process to look at the amount of visitor use that can ultimately be accommodated on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park and conflict that may occur between the three primary types of visitors--bicyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians. The principal objective of phase II research was to help define standards of quality for: 1) the number of visitors on the carriage roads, including, different types of visitors, and 2) relevant behavior of carriage road visitors, including speed of bicycles, passing from behind without warning, obstructing or blocking the carriage roads, dogs off-leash, and large groups of visitors. Secondary objectives of Please II research were 1) to explore development and use of a computer-based simulation model of carriage road use to assist in monitoring, 2) to determine attitudes of carriage road visitors toward alternative carriage road management practices, and 3) to determine how standards of quality and attitudes toward management practices might vary by type of carriage road visitor.'
