Chase GE, Gregory LL, National Park Service, Acadia National Park. 1999. Acadia National Park Purple Loosestrife Management Program: 1999 Management Summary. Acadia National Park Natural Resources Report 2000-03

This report contains complete methodology for the purple loosestrife control program at Acadia National Park during 1999. Following portions taken from executive summary: 'Annual monitoring of L. salicaria stem numbers was conducted along one randomly selected transect in each of the seven permanent monitoring grids. No L. salicaria stems were present in grids 1-4, or 6; one and 13 L. salicaria stems, respectively, were counted in grids 5 and 7.' 'All L. salicaria plants within the park were sprayed with a 1% glyphosate herbicide solution. Flowering heads were removed from plants prior to spraying. A two-week post-spray mortality check of plants was made; if plants were not dying they were re-sprayed. Two non-park sites received herbicide treatment after the park obtained landowner permission. Three non-park sites were not sprayed,, only flowering heads were removed. A total of 52.25 personnel hours were spent, and 7.14 gallons of glyphosate solution were used at 10 park and two non-park sites. Purple loosestrife plants in fifly acreas of total area were treated with herbicide.' 'Surveys for L. salicaria were conducted in areas where it previously grew, and in eight areas that have never had L. salicaria but contain suitable habitat. Additionally, a four person crew, while working on the Acadia vegetation map accuracy assessment, checked for presence of purple loosestrife in all freshwater wetlands visited during their field work, which included portions of Isle au Haut and Schoodic Peninsula. No new populations of loosestrife were found. Lastly, the geographic information system map of L. salicaria locations on Mount Desert Island was updated.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Aunt Bettys Pond/Duck Brook Pond/Duck Brook Meadow/Gilmore Meadow/Great Meadow/Entrance Station/Blackwoods Campground/Schooner Head Road/Witch Hole Pond/The Tarn/Bear Brook/Colby Field/Salisbury Cove/Bear Brook Pond/Bear Brook Stream/The Tarn/Visitor Center/Hulls Cove House/Kent Field/Blackwoods Dump Road/Satterlee Gravel Pit/Duck Brook Road/Stanley Brook Entrance/Thorndike Field/Precipice/Compass Harbor/Ocean Drive Motor Court/Acadia Motel/Bayview Inn/Old Farm Road Pond/Super Junk/Hamilton Pond/Town Hill/ISLE AU HAUT/SCHOODIC PENINSULA/
