This is phase III of a study using the Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) process to look at the amount of visitor use that can ultimately be accommodated on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park and conflict that may occur between the three primary types of visitors--bicyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians. The principal objective of phase III research was to help define 1) standards of quality for the acceptable number of carriage road visitors and problem behaviors of carriage road visitors, and 2) attitudes toward alternative carriage road management practices. Three other issues were also addressed: 1) the degree to which MDI (Mount Desert Island) residents have been displaced from the carriage roads due to changes in carriage road use, 2) the sense of place that MDI residents apply to Acadia National Park and MDI, and 3) participation and interest of MDI residents in educational programs conducted by Acadia National Park.
