From the introduction: "Acadia National Park (ANP) submits the following proposal for consideration as a prototype long-term ecological monitoring park in the Servicewide Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program. The long-term monitoring (LTM) of park resources is a common goal of the National Park Service (NPS) and ANP, and is widely recognized as fundamental to the management of park natural resources. This proposal documents a proactive approach to the management of ANP natural resources, and will serve as a model for other parks in designing and implementing an LTM program. Acadia's General (GMP) and Resource Management (RMP) Plans specifically identify the development and implementation of an LTM program as a fundamental goal supporting the park's primary mission - the protection and preservation of outstanding natural, cultural, scenic, and scientific values. In addition, the park has completed an annotated natural resource bibliography, identified and received Regional approval for a targeted natural resources staffing plan that identifies an L TM program manager and basic support staff, and held a natural resources scoping session which identified a conceptual model for a long-term monitoring program that builds on our existing program.
