Acadia National Park: Revegetation Program Annual Report: 1996

Executive summary: 'Acadia National Park Revegetation program goals for 1996 focused on developing and prioritizing a list of revegetation projects, incorporating the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC) into revegetation activities, completing high priority projects and developing monitoring protocols. A total of 291 person hours were spent planting 208 trees and shrubs and 2,787 plugs into nine sites. During 1996, the native plant revegetation program rehabilitated nine sites. A seasonal Biological Technician (Bio Tech) from the Resource Management division and various Maintenance division staff, directed projects which were completed with assistance from AYCC. Projects repaired erosion, visitor use, and/or construction damage, and included landscaping with native plants following construction of the Seawall Campground housing unit. Due to a rainy 1996 summer, only minimal watering was necessary at newly revegetated sites. Revegetation success was monitored at sites revegetated during 1994 and 1995 (Connery et al. 1995; Gregory 1996). Additional maintenance at some of these sites included weeding, adding wood chip mulch, and replacing revegetation signs closing areas to visitor use. The Nursery behind Sand Beach was actively maintained between May and October, and finally closed and winterized in November. In 1996, the park received 4, 520 'plug' and 435 container plants, grown from seed or cuttings collected in the park, from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through an existing cooperative agreement.
