From summary in the report: 'This handbook provides background information on ozone and its effects on native plants of Acadia National Park and an overview of the methods used to conduct field assessments of foliar ozone injury on plants in the park. Its use will allow future field assessments to be conducted in a manner compatible with that used in assessments conducted through 1997. However, the handbook can also serve as a starting point for expanding or reducing the focus or scope of the field surveys. It will also find applications as a blueprint for establishing similar surveys for foliar ozone injury in other national parks.' 'However, it is important to keep in mind that while this handbook provides a description of the process by which the field survey is conducted, it does not and cannot provide all the information required to make a definitive diagnosis of ozone injury in the field. The descriptions of foliar injury in the handbook along with the illustrations provided in the slide set are very helpful in this respect. However, there are no substitutions for seeing injury on leaves of plants that have received controlled exposure to ozone, and for the experience one obtains over time by looking a(t) ozone-injured plants both in the field and in the laboratory. The science of conducting a field survey is contained in this document, the art of performing a diagnosis in the field is not. Users of the handbook simply need to keep that in mind when in the field, and proceed with appropriate caution when deciding whether markings on plant foliage are, or are not, the result of exposure to ambient levels of ozone.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
