Results of an effort to monitor crowding on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park based on results of the VERP (Visitor Experience Resource Protection) research done in 1996-1997. Summary: 'Monitoring crowding on the carriage roads was plagued with equipment problems that compromised the data. Because crowding is monitored annually, this equipment will be repaired and the same techniques used again in 1998. Despite the questionable quality of the data however, the results suggest that crowding standards for the carriage roads were not violated in 1997. In contrast, behaviors were monitored effectively. Except for the 'dog off leash' behavior, standards were not violated. Behaviors will not be monitored again until the year 2000 unless visitor complaints rise substantially, indicating problem behaviors may have increased to unacceptable levels.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Carriage Roads/
