Results of an effort to monitor crowding on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park based on results of the VERP (Visitor Experience Resource Protection) research done in 1996-1997. Used trail counters and direct counts to determine crowding conditions and rule violation. A portion of the Executive Summary: "Carriage roads were monitored for crowding in 1998 using established methods. An electronic trail counter and attached computer recorded daily use on a section of the Eagle Lake carriage road. Daily use was used in a regression equation that describes the relationship between trail counter use and system wide carriage road use. System wide use estimates using these methods were compared to the established carrying capacity of 3,000 persons per day. Ten direct counts of PPVs were also made throughout the system as a spot check on simulation model estimates of PPVs at a use level of 3,000 persons per day." /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ACADIA NATIONAL PARK/Carriage Roads/
